Heavy rain is expected across parts of Metro Vancouver and Howe Sound from Monday evening, September 28, through Tuesday afternoon, September 29. Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a yellow rainfall warning, with 50 to 70 millimetres forecast.
The warning covers Vancouver, Burnaby and New Westminster; West Vancouver and North Vancouver; Coquitlam and Maple Ridge; and Howe Sound. It identifies a moderate impact level and high forecast confidence.
A frontal system moving south from the North Coast is expected to bring the rain into the Lower Mainland Monday evening. Strong, gusty southeasterly winds are also forecast overnight and Tuesday morning, with the heavier rain easing Tuesday afternoon.
The main concern for travellers is water collecting on roads and in low-lying areas. The federal weather agency warns of possible rush-hour disruption and washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts. Drivers should allow extra time and avoid flooded roads. The forecast describes expected conditions, rather than confirming that flooding or road closures have already occurred.
Around homes and neighbourhood streets, autumn leaves can make drainage problems worse. Leaves and litter accumulating over a catch basin prevent water from reaching the drain, allowing it to spread across the surrounding pavement.
Vancouver’s Adopt a Catch Basin program recommends checking drains before and after heavy rain, especially when trees are shedding their leaves. Residents who can safely clear a nearby grate should use a long-handled rake, broom or shovel rather than their hands. Debris should be removed from the grate, not pushed into the drain.
The city also advises wearing bright clothing, watching for vehicles and bicycles, and staying out of the street wherever possible. Needles, broken glass and other hazardous materials should be left alone and reported through Van311 or by calling 3-1-1.
Wet leaves should not be raked or blown from sidewalks and boulevards into the road. Keeping them out of the street helps prevent slippery surfaces and blocked drainage as the rain arrives.
