BC Hydro, Environment Canada’s weather warnings and BC Ferries say another round of bad weather could bring outages, damage and cancelled sailings.
The Story
More storms forecast for British Columbia are expected to follow a stormy Friday that knocked out power for about 80,000 people across the province at the peak, according to BC Hydro.
BC Hydro said crews were working to restore power in some areas, while also responding to additional outages caused by falling trees and branches.
Whitney Deane, a BC Hydro spokesperson, said Friday’s storm caused significant damage and that additional weather systems are expected through mid-week, with some winds potentially more impactful than conditions seen so far.
BC Ferries also announced that several sailings were cancelled on Saturday and that more cancellations are possible due to weather warnings.
The ferries from Tsawwassen to the Southern Gulf Islands were cancelled because of high winds and wave height in the Strait of Georgia, BC Ferries said.
As of 10 a.m. Saturday, Environment Canada’s weather warnings were at the Yellow Warning for wind.
That warning said damaging winds were expected to reach up to 90 km/h in the evening for the Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley areas, with conditions expected to last until Sunday morning.
Environment Canada warned the strong winds could knock out utilities and damage roofs, fences, branches and trees, and said there is a risk of injury from flying debris.
