Car Free Day is scheduled to return to Main Street on Sunday, Sept. 13, taking over 14 blocks in the Mount Pleasant and Riley Park neighbourhoods.
The event will run from noon until 7 p.m. along Main Street from East 10th Avenue to King Edward Avenue, with organizers planning dozens of vendors filling the streetscape. Live music is also scheduled at multiple locations along Main Street during the afternoon and early evening.
The street closure will affect travel through the area. The announcement says traffic impacts will be expected, and drivers travelling east to west will need to detour around the festival.
The Car Free Day on Main Street event is reported to be happening thanks to a $30,000 grant from the city, created earlier in the year. It also follows a spring decision that had cancelled Car Free Days events for 2026, with public support credited for allowing two festivals to proceed this year.
While the Sept. 13 event is set, the longer-term future of Car Free Days is described as uncertain. On the Car Free Vancouver website, the organization behind the events says it is seeking partners and describes continuing discussions with local representatives about how to better support not-for-profit festivals like theirs, even with a “path forward” for 2026.
