Herschel’s Deli and Schmeer is set to open at the entrance of Granville Island in Vancouver, serving hand-rolled NYC-style bagels and deli sandwiches.
The Story
Herschel’s Deli and Schmeer is coming to Vancouver with plans to serve what its team describes as NYC-style Jewish deli food at the entrance to Granville Island, at 1500 W. 2nd Ave., the former home of Tru Cafe.
Local celebrity chef Duran “Dman” Bodasing and Herschel Miedzygorski are teaming up for the new shop, which Bodasing has promoted publicly on Instagram, saying: “HELLO VANCOUVER BC WE ARE HERSCHEL’S DELI AND SCHMEER… Get ready for some New York City Jewish Deli Soul Vibes with a kick of Canadian style.”
The deli will offer bagels that are hand-rolled, boiled and baked fresh daily, with varieties including plain, cinnamon raisin and Asiago cheese, as well as pumpernickel, alongside other options.
Sandwiches are expected to include classic choices such as lox and Schmeer, described as smoked salmon with cream cheese, red onion, capers, cucumber, tomato and lemon, as well as a BEC on everything with a fried egg, crispy bacon, aged cheddar, arugula, tomato and herb aioli.
In addition to deli items, the shop will serve café favourites such as drip coffee and lattes. Bodasing said: “The party is just getting started at the entrance to our beloved Granville Island in the heart of Kitsilano.”
An exact opening date for Herschel’s Deli has not been announced.
Bodasing is described as a local celebrity chef and TV personality known for The Dome Cooking Show, where he cooks dishes inspired by his travels with B.C. produce in his dome-shaped penthouse. He is also preparing to launch The Cheeseburger Show. Miedzygorski is described as a former owner of Harry’s on Robson, Harry’s Diner on Pender, and Kitchen on Main St. (which he ran alongside Uli Schnur), and as the person behind Whistler-based Southside Delicatessen, which operated from 1984 until 2003.
