Third death confirmed after pickup truck hit four pedestrians during Tsawwassen Mills walk

Delta Police say a hospitalized person injured when a pickup truck collided with four pedestrians near Tsawwassen Mills on Sept. 30 has died.

The Story

Delta Police confirmed Wednesday that a third person has died following a pickup truck collision involving pedestrians during a Truth and Reconciliation walk at Tsawwassen Mills on Sept. 30.

In a release, police said the latest death is that of 64-year-old Gwenyth Brigit Dwyn. Police previously reported that First Nation Elder Barb Joe and Elder Virginia Splockton also died as a result of the incident.

Delta Police said a fourth person who was taken to hospital is now recovering at home.

Police said the investigation is ongoing. They noted that while they initially announced it appeared the driver of the truck had experienced a “medical incident,” they have not reached final conclusions about the cause.

Delta Police said investigators remain examining whether “the possibility that the driver experienced a medical event prior to the collisions remains under investigation.”

The release also says investigators have not identified evidence indicating the collision was targeted or ideologically motivated based on “the evidence reviewed to date.” It added that if further evidence establishes criminality, potential charges would be forwarded to Crown Counsel for assessment.

Police said they are also investigating an earlier collision as they examine the movements of the truck before pedestrians were hit.

Anyone with information who has not spoken to police is asked to call Delta Police at 604-946-4411 and refer to file 26-18401.
