Unifor says 97.3 per cent of members who voted over the weekend authorized the union to call a potential strike against Stellantis.
The Story
Stellantis workers in Canada voted over the weekend to authorize a potential strike, according to Unifor. The union said 97.3 per cent of members who took part in the vote supported giving the mandate, which means the union is not yet in a legal strike position because neither Unifor nor Stellantis has requested a “no board” report, a step required under labour law before job action.
Unifor represents more than 9,000 Stellantis workers in Canada and said a strike remains its last resort while the union continues to believe there is a path to a new collective agreement. The bargaining committee and the company are at an impasse over key issues, including job security and the future of the Brampton, Ont., assembly plant that Stellantis wants to sell.
Unifor said it “will not back down and accept a deal that weakens Stellantis’ footprint within Canada’s auto industry due to broken commitments.”
