House of Commons holds moment of silence for soldiers killed in Wainwright base fire

The House of Commons held a moment of silence Monday for four Canadian soldiers killed in a fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, which also sent dozens to hospital.

The Story

The House of Commons observed a moment of silence on Monday following a deadly fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta that killed four Canadian soldiers.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said members of Parliament are “united in grief” over a tragedy that touches “every corner of the country.”

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said soldiers at the scene ran toward the danger to help their comrades.

The soldiers of the 3rd Battalion of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and members of the Army Reserve were training with live munitions for overseas deployment on Saturday when the incident occurred.

The fire spread after strong winds swept up a grass fire across the training ground. The incident sent 39 people to hospital and left at least 19 in critical condition.

The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service is conducting a probe into what caused the fire.
