Carney says Canada is not yet in position to reach U.S. trade deal

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa is prepared to pursue a trade deal with the U.S. only when it suits Canada’s interests, adding that negotiators are not in that position right now.

The Story

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada is not yet in a position to reach a trade deal with U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, even as congressional midterms approach.

Carney made the comments on his way into the weekly Liberal national caucus meeting on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026.

He said Ottawa is prepared to make a deal only when it suits Canadians’ interests, adding that Canada “will pursue” such a deal if it presents itself.

Carney said Ottawa’s trade negotiators are “not in that position right now.”

He noted that while trade talks between Ottawa and Washington have intensified in recent days, the Canadian side has described the progress as limited.

Carney’s remarks came with Republican control of both houses of Congress on the line in the midterm elections scheduled for next Tuesday.
