Eby steps up “gouging” rhetoric with grocery and gas price cap events in late Sept and early Oct

BC NDP Leader David Eby used “gouging” language at multiple price-cap events between Sept. 27 and Oct. 3, while BC Green Leader Emily Lowan said the wealthy “make more money in one night’s sleep” at an event Monday.

The Story

BC NDP Leader David Eby has ramped up rhetoric focused on “gouging” British Columbians at a series of campaign events tied to price controls, according to public comments cited in a Tuesday analysis published Oct. 5, 2026.

On Sept. 27, Eby said at a developer tax event that wealthy owners would “pay more tax for the privilege of hoarding housing when people are looking for a place to live.”

On Oct. 1, at a gas price cap event, he said, “Government needs to use its force, we need to use our authority, we need to use our rules to make sure that British Columbians are not gouged,” adding that “we’re going to make sure that for you and your family that you’re not getting gouged at the till on the essentials that you need.”

On Oct. 3, at a grocery price cap event, Eby reiterated the focus on protecting people at grocery and everyday cost “till” points, according to the same cited remarks.

BC Green Leader Emily Lowan, cited as targeted by Eby’s campaign rhetoric, said at an event Monday that “The ultra-wealthy make more money in one night’s sleep than the average B.C. worker does in a year,” and added: “Asking someone with multiple homes and a massive stock portfolio to give a sliver of their wealth to ensure that British Columbians can afford an affordable, safe, and dignified life is worth the political will it takes to get there.”
