Baltimore took the lead with four earned runs against Blue Jays starter Max Scherzer, who struck out seven but surrendered the runs, including a two-run homer to Peter Alonso in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Toronto’s 2026 playoff hopes had already depended on favourable results, and the team entered Wednesday needing to win out while also requiring either the Chicago White Sox or the Cleveland Guardians to lose out in order to reach October.
The Blue Jays were not the only team missing enough ground; their elimination was not described as a surprise because the club’s path to the postseason had effectively narrowed earlier.
Scherzer could potentially make one more start for Toronto in Sunday’s season finale against the Cincinnati Reds, though no decision had been officially made at the time of Wednesday’s game.
Even after elimination, the Blue Jays still have four games remaining on their schedule. They will play the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Orioles at 6:35 p.m. ET / 3:35 p.m. PT, with the teams scheduled to follow that with an off day on Thursday.
Toronto’s final stretch continues with a three-game set against the Cincinnati Reds in Toronto, beginning Sunday, after the off day. The team’s last home-and-road matters were set to conclude with that series as the schedule wraps up.
