Canada signs a joint statement backing the International Criminal Court after the U.S. imposes sanctions

Canada signed a joint statement reaffirming “continued and unwavering” support for the International Criminal Court after the United States imposed sanctions on the tribunal.

The Story

Canada signed a joint statement backing the International Criminal Court after the United States moved to sanction the organization on Oct. 9, 2026.

The statement, signed by Canada along with Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, said the signatories “strongly disagree” with the sanctions and reaffirm their “continued and unwavering” support for the court.

The sanctions reportedly cut the court off from U.S.-based financial services, technology companies and U.S. currency. The U.S. action was described in the statement as part of a campaign to dismantle the tribunal over investigations into the United States and its allies, including Israel.

The United States announced the sanctions the same day the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to South African jurist Navi Pillay. Pillay chaired a commission that last year concluded Israel was responsible for a genocide with a specific intent to destroy Palestinians in Gaza.
