Carney says Ottawa will consider arm’s-length panel advice before deciding SKS rifle status

Prime Minister Mark Carney said the federal government will review the advice of an arm’s-length firearms classification panel before deciding the future of the SKS rifle.

The Story

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday that the federal government will look at the advice of an arm’s-length panel studying firearms classification before making any decision on the status of the SKS rifle.

Carney made the remarks during an event in Sherbrooke, Que., where he said the government needs the advice of professionals and the RCMP before making further decisions on firearms classification.

The federal government is also undertaking a review of Canada’s firearms classification regime that includes consultations on the SKS rifle.

The comments come as gun control advocates have criticized the government for not banning the semi-automatic SKS.

The evidence cited in the report also points to a Washington state court filing alleging that the Tumbler Ridge, B.C., killer discussed having an SKS gun and a “switch” for that type of rifle, which likely referred to a machine-gun conversion device.

Eighteen-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, identified in the report as the killer in the Feb. 10 attack, died by suicide after killing eight people in the shooting before taking her own life.
