The Seattle Seahawks signed quarterback Adrian Martinez and linebacker Jamie Sheriff to their practice squad Wednesday.
The Story
The Seattle Seahawks added two players to their practice squad on Wednesday, including quarterback Adrian Martinez, the team announced.
Martinez and linebacker Jamie Sheriff were signed after the Seahawks released linebacker Jimmy Ciarlo and receiver Malick Meiga to make room on the practice squad.
The move comes as Seattle looks for additional depth at quarterback while Sam Darnold is sidelined by injury for Sunday’s game against Arizona. Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said Darnold would not go on injured reserve and described his status as “week to week” with the quad injury suffered in Sunday’s loss to the Bears.
Martinez, who went undrafted out of Kansas State in 2023, began his pro career with the Lions before being waived prior to the start of the regular season. He later signed with the Birmingham Stallions of the United Football League and earned league MVP honours, as well as UFL championship game MVP honours.
Over the past three seasons, Martinez has spent time with the Jets and 49ers, appearing in one game with San Francisco last season. The team noted that his time with the 49ers should help him learn Seattle’s offence quickly, citing similarities between Seattle’s current and previous offensive staff and their past work in San Francisco.
In college, Martinez played four seasons at Nebraska and one at Kansas State, starting 47 career games and completing 63.6 percent of his pass attempts for 9,752 yards, 51 touchdowns and 31 interceptions, while rushing for 2,928 yards and 45 touchdowns.
Sheriff initially joined the Seahawks as an undrafted rookie in 2024. After training camp and the preseason with Seattle this year, he signed with the Rams’ practice squad following being waived during the cutdown to 53 players before the start of the season.
According to the team, Sheriff has appeared in three games over the past two seasons: two with Seattle in 2024 and 2025, and one with Carolina in 2024.
