Surrey South’s MLA Brent Chapman says he won’t seek re-election

Surrey South is currently represented by MLA Brent Chapman, who took office in 2024 and said he cannot stay with the Conservative Party after crossing to OneBC in September 2026.

The Story

Surrey South is a provincial riding in the Metro Vancouver, Surrey region. The riding is currently represented by MLA Brent Chapman, who first took office in 2024.

Chapman collected 13,056 votes, winning 58.83 per cent of the vote in the 2024 B.C. provincial election. Initially elected as a member of the Conservative Party, he crossed the floor to OneBC in September 2026.

In explaining his decision, Chapman said he could not stay in the party after seeing his wife, former Conservative Party of B.C. leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay, endure so many attacks.

Chapman is not running for re-election. The 2026 provincial election comes just two years after the previous election, with B.C.’s snap election called by Premier David Eby in September and election day one week after the municipal elections. In the provincial election, voters will select 93 Members of the Legislative Assembly to serve in the 44th B.C. Parliament. B.C. has 93 seats, and 47 are needed for a majority.
