North Vancouver RCMP say two male Mercedes drivers were ticketed with $600 fines after accessing the restricted Crosscut Bridge area on Sept. 17 to replicate photos from social media.

Two drivers were fined $600 each after North Vancouver RCMP say they entered a restricted area of the Crosscut Bridge to take photos, despite the bridge being designated for pedestrians and cyclists.
Police said the incident occurred on Sept. 17 at about 9 p.m., when RCMP responded to reports of two black Mercedes sedans in a restricted area of the bridge. Officers found that both vehicles had accessed the area through a bicycle-only lane and bypassed barriers located at bridge entry points intended to stop vehicle access.
RCMP said the Crosscut Bridge, which spans Highway 1, opened to the public in August and is only for pedestrians and cyclists. The vehicles’ presence in the restricted zone prompted enforcement for multiple concerns.
According to RCMP, the two drivers were both males in their 20s. They told police their intention was to replicate photos they believed they had seen on social media of vehicles on the bridge.
RCMP said both drivers received violation tickets for driving without due care, failing to obey restricted access, and for tinted windows. Each driver was fined $600.
Following the incident, the City of North Vancouver said concrete barriers were temporarily placed to keep pedestrian and cyclist access safe until permanent measures are installed. The city expects bollards ordered before the Sept. 17 incident will be installed in November.
The city also said no damage was reported after the incident and noted the bridge is designed to accommodate the weight of authorized maintenance vehicles.
With the Crosscut Bridge only recently opened, the case highlights the need for safe compliance with access rules designed to protect pedestrians and cyclists on a high-visibility transportation link over Highway 1.
