Doerkson says he’ll decide quickly after Nov. 20 on Massey Tunnel workforce as Conservatives target cancellation

Premier-designate Lorne Doerkson says he is not in a position to make decisions on the Massey Tunnel workforce until after the Nov. 20 transition.

The Story

Premier-designate Lorne Doerkson said Thursday that he is not currently in a position to make decisions about the workforce involved in pre-construction work for the George Massey Tunnel.

Doerkson said the incoming BC Conservatives are set to take power on Nov. 20, after the provincial election on Oct. 24.

He told reporters he will be “making a decision very quickly after the 20th, of course, when we’re sworn in with respect to the crossing there,” adding, “We’re completely committed to that.”

Doerkson also said he does not know whether the government is paying $1 million a day for preparatory work, noting, “I hear numbers floating around in the media, I have no understanding that those numbers are right or correct.”

The pre-construction work is underway as the outgoing BC NDP government continues activity between losing the election and handing over power to the BC Conservatives.

The Conservatives have campaigned on cancelling the $8.4-billion plan to replace the aging Massey Tunnel under the Fraser River with a new tunnel. Doerkson said the party plans to resurrect a previous proposal for a 10-lane bridge and that he hopes it can be built within the same five-year time frame, for $6 billion.
