Lorne Doerkson leads B.C. Conservatives to power with a two-thirds majority

Interim B.C. Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson is poised to become premier-designate after the party won an overwhelming two-thirds majority in the provincial election.

The Story

British Columbia has elected a B.C. Conservative government with an overwhelming two-thirds majority, according to preliminary results reported on election night.

Lorne Doerkson, who was named interim leader of the Conservatives just two days before the September 22 election call, is expected to stage his first news conference as premier-designate on Sunday.

Outgoing Premier David Eby, who called the snap election two years early, has announced his resignation as NDP leader.

The Conservatives have been elected or are leading in about 64 ridings in the 93-seat legislature, while the NDP has been reduced to about 27 ridings and the Greens won two seats.

The Greens’ leader, Emily Lowan, secured a seat on Vancouver Island.

Preliminary results show the popular vote went to the Conservatives with about 48 per cent of the vote, while the NDP won about 37 per cent and the Greens 11 per cent.

Turnout was preliminarily about 1.8 million, representing about 48 per cent of registered voters.
