VPD investigating unprovoked attack after man’s pant leg set on fire near Beach and Davie

Vancouver police say they are investigating an unprovoked early-morning assault in which a man’s pant leg was set on fire near Beach Avenue and Davie Street.

The Story

Vancouver Police say they are investigating an unprovoked attack early Wednesday that left a man’s pant leg on fire.

Police said the 57-year-old was sitting on a bench near Beach Avenue and Davie Street shortly before 1 a.m. when an unknown suspect approached him.

In a news release, police said the suspect “without warning or provocation… threw a liquid accelerant onto the victim’s pant leg and ignited it with a lighter before fleeing the scene,” adding that “no words or threats were exchanged prior to the assault.”

Officers said the man was able to stamp out the fire and was not injured.

Police conducted a search of the area but did not locate the suspect, who is described as about 5’8” with an average build and wearing dark clothing with “white around his neck.”

Const. Darren Wong said, “This was a completely unprovoked, random attack.”

Police ask anyone with information or dash cam footage to call the VPD non-emergency line at 604-717-3321.
