The Story
The fifth annual World of Love Multicultural Carnival Sound of Harmony brought multiple cultural traditions under one roof at the Great Canadian Casino Theatre last weekend, with the event taking place on Oct. 3.
Showcases at the carnival included hand-made artisan goods, demonstrations of traditional art making, and displays showing how different cultures enjoy tea.
Performers and cultural presentations included traditional outfits with colourful feather decorations and intricate cross-stitch, as well as a bagpipe performance by musician Mike Chisholm from Scotland in which he played a traditional Chinese song while the crowd reacted with gasps followed by cheers.
The program also included a Chinese traditional music ensemble, Suzhou Pingtan—described in the event material as a 400-year-old Chinese musical and oral performance—Kunqu Opera, and a range of dance performances featuring China, Peru, Indonesia, Romania and more.
The event was presented as blending traditional values with a modern cultural twist, and the day’s performances were promoted for viewers to watch on TikTok and through the listed accompanying social posts.
