White House press secretary Katie Zacharia said the Trump administration has asked Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign following criticism over allegations of improper conduct in Athens.
The Story
Trump appointee Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece, has been asked to resign from her post, White House press secretary Katie Zacharia said Tuesday.
Zacharia said the request follows “severe criticism” and allegations that Guilfoyle engaged in improper and possibly illegal conduct before and during her tenure in Athens.
The requested departure comes after Trump expressed dissatisfaction with reports about Guilfoyle’s alleged conduct on Monday, telling reporters at the White House, “We’re not happy.”
Trump said when asked if he was considering firing Guilfoyle, “Well, we’re looking at it.”
Guilfoyle has not addressed the reports directly. In a statement released late Sunday, her lawyers denied she had done anything wrong and said the money she sought from a Trump donor was payment for services—public appearances and speaking engagements that they said predated her ambassadorial nomination and were not paid.
