U.S. ambassador says officials are closely watching Canada for election interference

U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra says American officials are closely watching Canadian politicians for signs of election interference.

The Story

U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra says American officials are “closely watching” Canadian politicians for signs of election interference.

Hoekstra made the comment in a recent interview on the “The Really Big Show” podcast.

He said political ads run by the province of Ontario last year could be interpreted as political interference.

Hoekstra also cited comments by Industry Minister Mélanie Joly and former prime minister Justin Trudeau and said they also could amount to interference.

He warned Canadian politicians to keep their “nose out” of American politics in the weeks before the U.S. midterm elections.

Hoekstra said the United States will respond if any actions end up amounting to election interference.

The U.S. president is campaigning in battleground states ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections, which could affect which party controls the U.S. Congress.
