B.C. is planning Highway 11 and Highway 1 traffic-pattern changes from 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2 to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5 for overpass demolition.
The Story
Work to widen Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley continues this fall, and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says a major phase will affect commutes starting Friday, Oct. 2.
The ministry said traffic-pattern changes are planned on Highway 11 at Highway 1 as part of the widening and upgrade of the Trans-Canada Highway through the Lower Mainland.
Drivers are warned that several traffic diversions will be in place from 9 p.m. on Oct. 2 to 5 a.m. on Oct. 5 to allow crews to safely demolish the Highway 11 overpass.
The new westbound on-ramp to Highway 1 from northbound Highway 11 will be closed throughout the weekend, with drivers detoured via Marshall Road and McCallum Road.
The ministry also said Highway 11 under Highway 1 will be reduced to one lane in each direction during the overpass work.
It noted the schedule is weather-dependent, so the timing of the diversions may change, and drivers should check DriveBC for traffic and construction updates.
During construction, reduced speed limits of 50 km/h on Highway 11 and 80 km/h on Highway 1 will be in place, and drivers are reminded to slow down, use caution, and obey signage and traffic-control personnel.
The ministry said the latest activity is part of the Fraser Valley Highway 1 Corridor Improvement Program, which is intended to improve safety, reliability and capacity from 216th Street in Langley to Chilliwack, and would allow additional features such as HOV/EV lanes, bus-on-shoulder lanes, truck climbing lanes and a truck staging area.
