The Story

A jet-powered Russian drone struck two passenger trains stopped at a station in central Ukraine on Thursday, killing at least 13 people and injuring 10 others, officials said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack in a post on X as a “horrific attack” that struck passenger trains in Dnipro.

The Thursday strike was reported as a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine around Russian-occupied Oleshky stretched into a third day, with officials describing humanitarian aid as poised to roll into the city on Friday.

Ukrainian officials said the planned six-day ceasefire around Oleshky had held for 54 hours and that deliveries were due to begin the following day, alongside de-mining work on roads to prepare safe passage for a humanitarian convoy.

Both sides said they were adhering to the ceasefire, with Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets saying no violations had been reported and a Russian representative saying Russian engineers were working on de-mining Oleshky roads.

The ceasefire also prompted comments about people’s ability to evacuate from Oleshky, though officials said the mechanics of how that would work were unclear.

Elsewhere in the same reporting, Russia’s Defense Ministry said air defenses downed 1,214 Ukrainian drones overnight, while Ukraine said Russia fired 112 drones at seven locations across the country.

Ukrainian officials and both sides’ representatives also credited efforts to help broker the temporary ceasefire to U.S. first lady Melania Trump, according to the White House, and said Pope Leo XIV also pressed for a truce.
