Finland’s 24/7 puppy livestream returns with six newborns in the first weeks of life

A 24/7 slow-TV livestream from Finland is featuring six newborn puppies as they open their eyes and take their first clumsy steps.

The Story

Finland — Finland’s national public broadcaster Yle has launched “Pentulive,” a 24/7 slow-TV livestream featuring six newborn puppies that are being filmed as they develop in their first weeks of life.

The puppies’ mother is a five-year-old Lagotto Romagnolo named Hilkka, and she gave birth to four males and two females on Oct. 10.

On Thursday, the puppies weighed roughly 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) each, with brown and white fur.

As the livestream began, the puppies were described as just opening their eyes and ears and taking their first steps, with most of their time spent nursing and napping.

The livestream is in its sixth season and is expected to break viewership records again, and the show had already drawn more than 6 million views on social media in less than two weeks in a country of 5.7 million people.

A naming ceremony is set for Saturday, and the programme includes science segments, including chat sessions with viewers three times a week, as well as a podcast and online articles about the dogs’ development.

Yle keeps the breeder’s name and location anonymous for privacy, and the puppies are expected to be adopted mid-December by people chosen by the breeder.

The puppies’ new families are selected before the livestream begins each year.
