The Seattle Kraken erased a first-period deficit against the Calgary Flames, tied the game on Berkly Catton’s goal and won 2-1 on a Matty Beniers overtime strike.
The Story
The Seattle Kraken rallied after falling behind in the first period to defeat the Calgary Flames 2-1 in overtime on Wednesday at Climate Pledge Arena.
Calgary opened the scoring in the first period when Yegor Sharangovich scored off a deflection on a point shot. Seattle eventually found the equalizer in the second period when Berkly Catton snapped a shot past Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf with under seven minutes remaining.
Catton’s game-tying goal came with Seattle working for an equalizer after a call on an earlier first-period tally was waved off when replay showed he had crossed the Calgary blue line ahead of the puck. It was also the team’s first goal in nearly a full hockey game following a late second-period score during a 6-2 loss in Calgary last Friday.
Goaltender Joey Daccord made several key stops to keep the deficit from widening. After stopping 25 of 26 shots in the Kraken’s win, Daccord said he was focused on making “the big save when the team needs it,” including two in the third period.
His performance was tested late when Calgary forward Martin Pospisil barreled into Daccord from behind while the goalie was playing behind the net. Montour went after Pospisil and officials stepped in, with Pospisil assessed an extra two-minute goalie interference penalty as Daccord recovered.
The Kraken carried the game into overtime and scored quickly. Matty Beniers ended it 55 seconds into the 3-on-3 session by firing a puck low to the glove side of Wolf, off the inner goal post and in.
With the victory, Seattle improved to 9-5-1 and earned its first overtime win of the season. Beniers said the breakaway that led to the winning goal was “probably the longest” of his career.
Calgary and Seattle had split the season series with Calgary winning it 3-1 heading into Wednesday’s matchup. The Kraken had also dropped the previous game in Calgary five days earlier.
After Wednesday’s win, Seattle is scheduled to play once more Saturday at home against the New York Rangers before heading to Finland for the NHL Global Series, where they will play Carolina twice.
