Metro Vancouver forecast: sunny stretch this weekend after mostly cloudy Thu and Fri

Environment Canada meteorologist Jennifer Kowal says a sunnier weather pattern is expected to replace mostly cloudy conditions on Oct. 1 and 2.

The Story

Environment Canada meteorologist Jennifer Kowal called the upcoming weather “a bit of a gift,” saying Metro Vancouver is set to shift from mostly cloudy conditions late in the workweek to a sunny stretch beginning this weekend.

Kowal said Thursday and Friday, Oct. 1 and 2, are expected to be mostly cloudy with a scattering of showers as a system is expected to pass north of Vancouver. High temperatures are expected to be around the seasonal average of 16 C both days, with overnight lows around 11 C.

By the weekend, Kowal said the system is expected to have moved north, allowing a ridge of high pressure to steer conditions away from incoming weather and produce blue skies and sunshine for several days. The sunny streak is expected to last at least through Monday, with temperatures peaking around 18 C each day in Vancouver, and Sunday, Oct. 4 expected to be the warmest day.

Kowal said it could be “a little bit warmer inland” if the area stays sunny long enough for the ground to hold onto heat. She said Metro Vancouver areas further east, including Surrey and Langley, could break the 20 C barrier, with Abbotsford reaching up to 23 C, just under the record of 25 C.

Kowal said the warmest temperatures in Vancouver are expected between 2 and 4 p.m. each day and then drop quickly after. With little or no cloud cover to retain warmth, overnight temperatures are expected to fall to around 10 C each night.

Looking to next week, Kowal said the ridge is expected to keep serious weather away for a while, though some cloud cover may move in on Tuesday and Wednesday. She said it should still be relatively sunny, dry and warm, with temperatures around 18 C in Vancouver. She noted that some models suggest a more active weather pattern could return later, around Thursday and Friday, Oct. 8 and 9, though they are not in agreement.
