Trump walks back threat to ban Bombardier plane sales in the United States

U.S. President Donald Trump said he has changed his view of Bombardier and does not want to follow through on a threat to restrict its U.S. plane sales.

The Story

U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday night in Wichita, Kansas, that he has backed down from a threat to ban Bombardier Inc. plane sales in the United States.

Trump said he now views Bombardier, a Quebec-based business jet maker, as “purely Canadian” and does not want to follow through on “hurting” the company, citing its presence in Wichita, where Bombardier employs about 1,500 workers.

Wichita is the seat of Bombardier’s defence division, and the company has about 3,500 American employees across several states.

The comments followed Trump’s earlier stance last month, when he suggested he would bar Bombardier’s business in the United States unless the company moved its operations there, despite concerns from experts that such a move would harm American workers.

Bombardier shares rose $9.10, or about 3 per cent, to $320.57 by midday Tuesday.
