Jennifer Belcarras and her daughter Selah Reed were killed on the Snooka Trail in Bella Coola during the second fatal grizzly attack in less than a year.
The Story
Jennifer Belcarras, 48, and her daughter Selah Reed, 20, were killed while walking on the Snooka Trail just minutes from their home in Bella Coola, B.C.
The deaths come nearly a year after a grizzly attack on a group of Nuxalk Nation elementary students on a field trip, leaving 11 injured.
In the aftermath of the latest attack, conservation officers are using DNA sampling and bear traps in an effort to determine whether the same animal may have been involved.
While fatal encounters remain extraordinarily rare in British Columbia, one local leader said community members are “retriggered” as they wait for answers.
