Hot pepper paste recalled in Canada due to undeclared wheat, Health Canada warns

Health Canada is warning people with wheat allergies or celiac disease not to consume recalled Taeyangcho Gochujang products.

The Story

Health Canada has issued a recall affecting Taeyangcho Gochujang hot pepper paste in Canada after undeclared wheat was identified in the product.

The recall notice, dated Oct. 3, advises consumers with a wheat allergy or those with celiac disease or other gluten-related disorders not to eat the recalled items. The brand is listed as “N/A” in the notice because the label shows Korean characters only.

The recalled products include three sizes, identified by the following barcodes: 170 g — 8801075012323, 500 g — 8801075012316, and 1 kg — 8801075012620. Health Canada says the products were distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan.

Health Canada says the recall was triggered by a customer complaint, and that there have been no reported reactions related to consumption of the recalled products. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is conducting a food safety investigation and the recall could expand to other products.

People with questions can contact the CFIA by phone at 1-613-773-2342 or by email.
