Prime Minister Mark Carney said the federal government is making a new $1.2 billion investment in ocean conservation as it moves toward a decision on a proposed West Coast pipeline from Alberta to the southern B.C. coast.
Speaking in Vancouver on Tuesday, Carney said the funding will support several new measures, including an expansion of the Canadian Coast Guard’s capacity to monitor marine traffic.
Carney also said the investment will include a national marine mammal oil spill response plan.
He linked the announcement to growing shipping activity, saying more ships entering the Port of Vancouver make it necessary for the government to bolster systems for protecting marine life.
The government’s decision relates to whether the pipeline proposal should be designated as a project of national interest, with Ottawa facing a Thursday deadline.
Earlier in the day, LNG Canada said it would proceed with a Phase 2 expansion of its facility in Kitimat, B.C., a project the company said would double its capacity.
