Whitecaps shut out CF Montreal 2-0 to finish their regular season and end Montreal’s campaign

The Vancouver Whitecaps beat CF Montreal 2-0 on Saturday at Stade Saputo, with Cheikh Sabaly and Mihail Gherasimencov scoring to complete the regular season.

The Story

Vancouver’s Whitecaps closed the regular season with a 2-0 shutout over CF Montreal on Saturday afternoon at Stade Saputo, handing Montreal a loss that capped the club’s worst season in its history. The Whitecaps finished with a 19-8-8 record, while CF Montreal ended at 6-20-9 and was shut out for the 14th time this season.

Cheikh Sabaly opened the scoring for Vancouver in the 50th minute after a break into the penalty area. Samsy Keita initially saved Sabaly’s shot, but Sabaly was first to the rebound and finished into the empty net.

Mihail Gherasimencov added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute from a difficult angle to secure the result for Vancouver.

The match remained scoreless at halftime after both teams traded long stretches of possession with limited attacking chances in the first half.

After the break, Vancouver created early opportunities, with Sabaly and Noah Streit having point-blank shots that struck the crossbar. Rayan Elloumi also fired a powerful strike that forced a quick save from Keita.

Ahead of CF Montreal’s final two home games, both of the club’s main supporters’ groups—Collectif IMFC and 1642MTL—announced they would not be present in any capacity.
