CF Montreal finishes worst season as Whitecaps win 2-0

CF Montreal closed out its worst season on record with a 2-0 loss to Vancouver in MLS action on Nov. 7, 2026.

The Story

CF Montreal’s worst season in club history ended with a 2-0 defeat to the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2026, at Stade Saputo.

Vancouver scored through Cheikh Sabaly and Mihail Gherasimencov to improve its league position, finishing the match with a record of 19-8-8 and securing second place in Major League Soccer’s Supporters’ Shield standings.

Montreal, now 6-20-9 after the loss, were shut out for the 14th time this season.

The match began with limited chances in the first half as both teams spent long stretches in the offensive third without creating clear opportunities, and they went into the break scoreless.

The second half opened with a flurry of action and near misses early on, including point-blank shots by Sabaly and Noah Streit that struck the crossbar. Rayan Elloumi also forced a quick save from Montreal goalkeeper Samsy Keita.

Vancouver broke the deadlock in the 50th minute when Sabaly took advantage of a breakaway situation inside the penalty area. After Keita made an initial save, Sabaly was first to the rebound and finished into the empty net.

Following that goal, Montreal generated positive moments but could not convert, with each shot doing little to trouble Whitecaps goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka.

Gherasimencov added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute from a difficult angle to make it 2-0 and secure the win for Vancouver.

Before the team’s final two home matches, both of Montreal’s main supporters’ groups—Collectif IMFC and 1642MTL—announced they would not attend in any capacity.
