Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to join former Alberta deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk at a pro-Canada rally in Calgary ahead of Monday’s separation vote.
The Story
Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected in Calgary today to take part in a pro-Canada rally with former Alberta deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk, as Alberta approaches Monday’s referendum vote.
Carney is scheduled to join Lukaszuk at an event for his “Forever Canadian” group before Albertans vote on 10 questions, including whether Alberta should stay in Canada or hold a second, binding vote on quitting Confederation.
Carney has previously said Canada is worth fighting for and that the country works better when it works together.
The Calgary appearance comes amid a longer-running campaign alongside Lukaszuk: last month, Carney invited Lukaszuk’s group to attend a cabinet retreat in Banff, and Carney signed the Maple Leaf-wrapped motorhome Lukaszuk has been touring through the province.
Carney is also scheduled to attend a rally with Lukaszuk in Edmonton on Friday, while Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and Premier Danielle Smith are scheduled to deliver speeches at a conference in Calgary on Friday as well.
