Gatcomb scores late in second to lift Golden Knights over Canucks 3-2

Marc Gatcomb’s go-ahead goal helped the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 at Rogers Arena on Sunday.

The Story

Marc Gatcomb scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period as the Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 at Rogers Arena on Sunday.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-1-0 as Mitch Marner and Victor Olofsson also scored, and Adin Hill made 17 saves.

Vancouver fell to 2-2-0. Paul Cotter and Jonathan Lekkerimaki scored, and Kevin Lankinen made 25 saves.

Cotter opened the scoring 18:52 into the first period, scoring in his 300th NHL game to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead.

Taking the place of Jake DeBrusk due to illness, Cotter scored on Vancouver’s top power play when he tipped Filip Hronek’s cross-ice pass out of the air and over Hill from close range, extending his point streak to four games and six points (four goals, two assists).

Marner tied the game at 9:01 of the second period after Brayden McNabb’s point shot deflected off the skate of Canucks defenceman Zeev Buium and into Marner’s path in the right slot.

Olofsson put Vegas ahead 2-1 at 14:30 on a five-forward power play, converting a rebound with Mark Stone passing from a Jack Eichel one-timer setup.

Lekkerimaki knotted the score again at 2-2 at 17:54, skating onto a loose puck and firing a far-side wrist shot under Hill’s blocker arm from low in the right face-off circle.

Vegas restored its lead 34 seconds later after a rebound of Braeden Bowman’s wraparound attempt went to Gatcomb at the side of the net for a tap-in. It was Gatcomb’s first goal since signing with the Golden Knights as a free agent on July 1.

The Golden Knights had bounced back from a 4-3 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Friday, while Vancouver was playing back-to-back after a 4-1 win against the Calgary Flames on Saturday.
