Seahawks’ Quenton Nelson to have minor surgery after knee injury in debut vs. Bears

New Seattle guard Quenton Nelson will miss the Cardinals game after the team says a minor surgery is needed for an aggravated knee injury.

The Story

The Seattle Seahawks traded for offensive guard Quenton Nelson last week, then reported this week that he will require minor surgery after aggravating a knee injury during his debut.

Seattle acquired Nelson from the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a 2027 third-round pick and a fifth-rounder in 2028.

Nelson played his first game for Seattle in Monday night’s 34-17 loss to the Chicago Bears, but head coach Mike Macdonald said on Friday that Nelson was ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.

The team put Nelson on the injury report this week with a knee injury. Macdonald said Nelson was limited in practice on Wednesday and did not participate in Thursday’s practice, and that the injury was aggravated after the trade.

Macdonald explained the decision to address the issue now at a news briefing, saying: "In short, he had something that he was dealing with when he got here, and we re-imaged it, and it was aggravated to some degree," before adding that the team decided it was best "to take care of it now and play the long game. So he'll be week-to-week at this point."

Nelson is listed as week-to-week, and the Seahawks said they do not plan to place him on injured reserve. He was also listed with a knee injury on last week’s injury report, after playing three full days of practice prior to facing Chicago.

Earlier this week, Seahawks offensive coordinator Brian Fleury said the offensive line had room to grow after adding Nelson, adding: "I wouldn't say that it was perfect," Fleury said of the unit’s performance against the Bears. "But considering all the moving parts and the new people in new places communicating in different ways, I was overall happy with what they were able to do out there. I think that there's room for growth and I'm excited to see that growth."
