The Story
The Vancouver Art Gallery has welcomed two new Trustees to its Association Board: Carol Chiang and David Rowntree.
The appointments were announced on Wednesday, Oct. 28, and they assumed their new roles immediately, the Gallery said at its Annual General Meeting.
The Gallery’s update was tied to a year it said saw more than $7.4 million in strengthened financial position, its highest admissions in three years, and transformative philanthropic support that advances its long-term vision.
The Gallery also acknowledged the departure of Dana Claxton, Sarah Kirby-Yung, Peter Meiszner and Esther Rausenberg, who collectively brought 24 years of service to the Association Board.
Jon Stovell, Chair of the Gallery’s Board of Trustees, said the Gallery was “delighted to welcome Carol and David to the Board at this pivotal time,” adding that “their extraordinary vision, leadership and connections will be invaluable” as it builds on recent progress and looks ahead to its future home.
Stovell also said the Gallery was “hugely grateful to Dana, Sarah, Peter and Esther for their years of service” and for “the insight, dedication and care they have brought to the Gallery.”
Carol Chiang is a Fellow Chartered Professional Accountant with 35 years of experience, much of it in organizations across British Columbia, according to the Gallery. The announcement says she is a former KPMG partner and was the firm’s British Columbia Not-for-Profit Sector Leader, advising organizations across arts and culture, education, healthcare and community services on financial reporting, governance and accountability.
The Gallery said Chiang has served on boards including Destination BC, the Terry Fox Research Institute, Canadian Accredited Independent Schools, the KPMG Foundation and Minerva BC.
In her statement on joining the board, Chiang said she was “thrilled to be joining the Board at such an exciting time, with the Gallery looking ahead to a new building and a new chapter in its history,” and that she is “excited to lend my support and help the Gallery build on its momentum.”
David Rowntree joins the Gallery as an ex-officio Trustee in his capacity as Chair of the Vancouver Art Gallery Foundation, the Gallery said. The announcement describes him as the Founder and Managing Director of Highland West Capital Ltd., a Vancouver-based family office, and as a co-founder of Tricor Pacific Capital Inc., where he helped grow assets under management to nearly one billion dollars.
According to the Gallery, Rowntree has held senior executive and board positions across the corporate sector and has experience in private equity, corporate finance, legal affairs and business leadership.
The announcement also says Rowntree has served as Chair of the Vancouver Art Gallery Foundation Board and was formerly Chair of the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation Board.
Rowntree said in a statement that the Vancouver Art Gallery is “a cultural hub at the heart of our city,” and said he was “delighted to join the Association Board alongside such dedicated individuals” while supporting the Gallery’s “continued growth and ambitions.”
