A serious collision has shut down westbound Highway 1 through Burnaby for several hours Wednesday morning as police investigate.

A serious collision prompted a full closure of westbound Highway 1 in Burnaby between Kensington Avenue and Sprott Street on Wednesday morning, with police directing drivers to use alternate routes for the duration of the rush-hour period.
DriveBC first reported the incident shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 23, saying that all westbound lanes at Highway 1 and Kensington Avenue were blocked. By early morning, Burnaby RCMP had expanded the closure, stating that westbound Highway 1 between Kensington Avenue and Sprott Street was fully closed while officers continued their investigation.
Cpl. Mike Kalanj said traffic was being directed off Highway 1 at Kensington Avenue and back onto Highway 1 via Sprott Street. He also noted that the westbound on-ramp from Kensington Avenue is closed, meaning drivers cannot access westbound Highway 1 from Kensington.
Police said the closure was expected to remain in place throughout the morning rush hour and could last until the afternoon. They urged drivers to use alternate routes if possible and said additional details would be provided when available.
DriveBC photos indicated substantial congestion on westbound Highway 1, and Google Maps showed delays extending to alternate corridors such as Lougheed Highway and Barnet Highway. Police had not released information about any injuries resulting from the collision at the time the closures were described.
