Surrey Police Service says it arrested Amritpal Singh Bath after a traffic stop in Whalley revealed an INTERPOL Red Notice for a homicide abroad.
The Story
Surrey Police Service (SPS) says a foreign national wanted on an INTERPOL Red Notice for murder was arrested during a traffic stop in the city’s Whalley neighbourhood on Oct. 8.
SPS media liaison Ian MacDonald said an officer working in the area around 8:20 p.m. noticed a car driving erratically and pulled it over to check whether the driver was impaired.
MacDonald said that while interacting with the driver and passenger, the passenger purported to be going by the name of Harpreet Singh and produced identification in that name.
He said the identification did not look genuine, prompting the officer to confirm the passenger’s actual name as Amritpal Singh Bath.
According to MacDonald, when the officer searched the name in police databases, he learned Bath was wanted through INTERPOL.
MacDonald said the officer detained Bath, contacted the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA), and confirmed there was a Red Notice for an arrest warrant related to a homicide in another country.
He said the officer took custody of Bath and ultimately turned him over to CBSA, describing Bath as a potential danger not only to Canadian citizens but internationally.
MacDonald said authorities had not been aware that Bath was in Canada, and it was not clear whether the driver knew the passenger was wanted.
SPS says Bath remains in CBSA custody.
INTERPOL describes a Red Notice as a request to law enforcement agencies worldwide to provisionally arrest the person named in the notice.
