Canada again voted at the UN General Assembly against the United States’ economic embargo on Cuba, as the measure passed 130-17 with 25 abstentions for the 34th year in a row.
The Story
Canada has again voted at the United Nations to oppose the United States’ embargo on Cuba.
The UN General Assembly vote on the condemnation of the economic embargo passed 130-17, with 25 abstentions, for the 34th consecutive year.
The number of countries voting against the embargo fell by 30, and several countries that had opposed it previously—including Germany and Italy—abstained for the first time.
Cuba said the United States is running a campaign of coercion to influence the vote, accusing Washington of threatening countries that oppose the embargo with the loss of aid and trade access, a claim Washington has not rejected.
The Cuban government also said the embargo has contributed to a humanitarian emergency, including through a U.S. blockade of fuel imports, and it tied the island’s economic crisis to the actions of the United States rather than the government in Havana.
In Ottawa, Cuba’s embassy said the United States is using collective punishment to force regime change and called on Canada to maintain its support, a position the Bloc Québécois endorsed this week.
