B.C. Conservatives say New Democrat tax changes announced by Premier David Eby would push doctors out of the province, while the NDP frames them as a way for top earners to help fund health care.
The Story
B.C. Conservatives have criticized New Democrat tax proposals they say would drive doctors out of the province, arguing the change would come at a time when B.C. needs more physicians.
The Conservative reaction followed an announcement by NDP Leader David Eby on Sunday introducing a new tax bracket for people earning more than $1 million a year.
The New Democrat policy would also raise the existing tax rates in B.C.’s two highest income brackets, a proposal the Conservatives say would result in about a two per cent increase for people earning as low as $190,405 annually.
The Conservatives argued the higher burden would drive doctors out of B.C., while the NDP said the plan is intended to have top income earners pay more to improve health care.
On the campaign trail, Eby is scheduled to be in Victoria for an announcement, while Conservative interim leader Lorne Doerkson was set to campaign in 100 Mile House.
Elections BC confirmed the official candidates list ahead of the Oct. 24 election, with the Conservatives running in all 93 ridings and the New Democrats running 92 candidates after a paperwork issue was reported to have held up the process in Peace River North.
