BC Wildfire Service says the Mount Jack wildfire, discovered late Sunday on southern Vancouver Island, is out of control.

A wildfire burning on southern Vancouver Island was reported out of control as crews responded to the Mount Jack blaze, according to the BC Wildfire Service.
The service said the fire was discovered late Sunday and is located about four kilometres west of Sooke River and south of Mount Jack. It has grown to roughly 0.5 square kilometres amid warm and dry conditions.
In its update on social media, BC Wildfire Service said smoke from the fire can be seen as far north as Shawnigan Lake and in Greater Victoria, indicating that conditions are allowing visible impact beyond the immediate area.
Crews are working to contain the flames, but the service warned that further growth of the wildfire can be expected. It did not provide additional details on containment progress or expected control timelines.
The wildfire service stated that the fire does not currently pose a threat to public safety or critical infrastructure.
More broadly, the update noted that while the wildfire season is winding down, there are still more than 100 fires burning in B.C., and four of them are considered out of control.
