Metro Vancouver forecast: mostly sunny Thanksgiving weekend with a small rain system beforehand

Environment Canada meteorologist Terri Lang says Metro Vancouver should see mostly sunny conditions over Thanksgiving weekend after a brief period of rain.

The Story

Environment Canada meteorologist Terri Lang says the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend is shaping up to be relatively calm for the southern part of B.C., particularly the Lower Mainland, with average temperatures and mostly sunny skies.

Lang said a small system is expected to move into Vancouver on Thursday night, bringing cloudy skies. She said up to eight millimetres of precipitation is expected by midday Friday, mainly during the overnight period into the morning, which she noted could still be present during morning commuting.

After that system moves on, Lang said Vancouver should see mostly clear skies until next Tuesday, Oct. 13. She added that while no systems are expected over the weekend, low-lying clouds and fog are likely to form each morning and may cover Vancouver for a while, though no precipitation is expected. She said areas farther from the ocean are likely to see less cloud.

For the holiday period, Lang said temperatures are expected to run near normal for this time of year, with highs around 16 C and lows around 8 C. She characterized the overall pattern as “steady as she goes,” with Friday potentially a little cooler due to the rainfall.

Outside Metro Vancouver, Lang said colder air is starting to seep into the Interior, which may affect travel plans. She noted winter tires, or tires rated for winter driving such as some all-weather tires, are legally required for mountain pass routes in B.C., with at least 3.5 mm of tread.

Lang said routes requiring winter-rated tires include Highway 99 to Whistler, Highway 1 past Hope, the Coquihalla, Highway 3 into Southern B.C., and the Malahat on Vancouver Island. She said the Interior is expected to be dry, but drivers may start to encounter snow at the passes, and recommended checking the Drive BC map for live route conditions.
