Abus Magomedov submitted Cam Rowston in the first round on the UFC 333 prelims in Abu Dhabi and discussed why takedown attempts help his game.
The Story
Abus Magomedov met the media Saturday after his win over Cam Rowston at UFC 333 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.
Magomedov, listed at 30-7-1 in MMA and 6-3 in the UFC, submitted Rowston, listed at 15-4 in MMA and 3-1 in the UFC, in the first round on the prelims.
Rowston suffered the first loss of his UFC career. Around 90 seconds into the first round, he shot for a takedown and Magomedov latched onto a guillotine choke, eventually getting the tap.
When asked about the sequence, Magomedov said it was “his choice to go on the ground.” He added: “I never try to take someone to the ground … If someone tries to take me down, it's easier to submit him because then I have some options for a guillotine or other stuff.”
Magomedov said he knew the fight was close to ending once his arm was inside, saying: “I knew already when my arm was inside, he's done – it's just, how long he's going to survive. I knew. My hand was inside, and I knew I've got him.”
He also referenced a potential matchup, saying he called out “(Gregory) 'Robocop' (Rodrigues).” Magomedov said they train together from a past period in Germany and that “There's nothing personal – just respect for him. Let's see who's better. I need to come up (in the rankings), and he's on the way.”
Magomedov concluded: “Sorry, 'Robocop,' but let's do it.”
