Kraken bury Flames with three goals in the opening 7:40, rout Calgary 6-1

The game was tilted before Calgary could settle in

Seattle did not need long to seize control. Berkly Catton opened the scoring just 2:22 into the first period on an unassisted wrist shot, Mackie Samoskevich doubled the lead at 4:40 from Brandon Montour and Ryker Evans, and Bobby McMann made it 3-0 at 7:40 with Chandler Stephenson collecting the assist. A competitive game on paper turned into a recovery job for Calgary before the opening period was half gone.

That burst mattered because the Flames were not absent from the numbers afterward. Calgary finished with 32 shots, won 53.4 per cent of the faceoffs and delivered 29 hits. Those are usually signs of a team forcing itself into the evening. Instead, the early three-goal gap meant every Calgary push came from behind, while Seattle could play from a position of control without needing a power play to keep extending the margin.

Seattle kept adding, and the late answer came quickly

The Kraken did not let the game flatten out in the second period. Shane Wright pushed the lead to 4-0 at 11:58 with a backhander set up by Catton and Vince Dunn. Then, with the period nearly finished, Samoskevich struck again at 19:34, this time on a wrist shot from Matty Beniers and Jared McCann. By the second intermission, Seattle had turned a fast start into a complete scoreboard command at 5-0.

Calgary finally broke through at 14:25 of the third when Morgan Frost tipped home the Flames' lone goal, with Matvei Gridin and Joel Farabee drawing the assists. That was Calgary's one success on two power-play chances. Any hint of late momentum lasted only 39 seconds. Jordan Eberle answered at 15:04 off feeds from Stephenson and Montour, restoring the five-goal cushion and closing the scoring at 6-1.

Daccord had the answer, and the Kraken blocked the rest

The clearest reason Calgary's shot total led nowhere was Joey Daccord. He stopped 31 of 32 shots and finished at .969, turning a busy workload into a quiet line on the scoreboard. When pucks did get through traffic, Daccord cleaned them up. When they did not, Seattle's skaters helped enormously, combining for 20 blocked shots. Adam Larsson led that effort with four blocks, and the Kraken's blue line chipped in across the board.

Calgary still found individual volume. Mikael Backlund and Matt Coronato each put five shots on goal, while Frost had three and supplied the only finish that beat Daccord. But Seattle's own attack was far more punishing. The Kraken scored six times on 27 shots, with Samoskevich recording the only multi-goal night, Catton adding a goal and an assist, and both Stephenson and Montour finishing with two assists. Just as notable, Seattle built all of that damage at even strength because Calgary did not take a penalty.

Our take

This result was less about territorial dominance than about what each team did with its opportunities. Calgary actually generated more shots and won more draws, but Seattle made the more decisive plays from the opening minutes onward and defended the shot lane far better once it had the lead. Three goals in the first 7:40 changed the game, and the combination of efficient finishing, 20 blocked shots and strong goaltending made the rest of the stat sheet feel secondary.

For the Flames, the most obvious correction starts with game management. Fourteen giveaways and six goals against on 27 shots is a harsh ratio, especially when the club also did enough good work to win faceoffs and finally cash one power play. Falling behind 3-0 that quickly erased any room for a patient response. For Seattle, the encouraging part is that the offensive spread looked sustainable for one night: six different scoring plays, several contributors with points, and a goaltender who ensured the early edge never came under real threat.
