Guenther scores twice as Mammoth bury Blackhawks with late first-period burst

The Utah Mammoth turned a scoreless opening period into a runaway Thursday night, striking twice in 40 seconds late in the first and rolling past the Chicago Blackhawks 6-0 at Delta Center. Dylan Guenther scored two goals and Karel Vejmelka handled all 15 shots he faced for the shutout.

Forty seconds that flipped the night

For 16 minutes and change, Chicago kept the game where it needed to be: level. Then Utah snapped it open almost instantly. Guenther broke the deadlock at 16:41 of the first period on a snap shot set up by Logan Cooley and Clayton Keller, and Michael Carcone doubled the lead at 17:21 with a wrist shot off a feed from Kevin Stenlund.

That burst changed the shape of the evening. Instead of carrying a tied game into intermission, the Blackhawks went to the room trailing by two, and Utah kept building in the second. Nick Schmaltz made it 3-0 at 9:47 from Vincent Trocheck and Mikhail Sergachev. Anders Lee pushed it to 4-0 at 13:06 with a tip-in assisted by Andrew Peeke and Dmitri Simashev. Guenther added his second at 15:28, another tip-in, with Keller and Lawson Crouse collecting the assists.

By the end of the second period, the Mammoth had turned a close start into a 5-0 game. Guenther's finishing stood out, but so did the way Utah spread the playmaking around him. Keller finished with two assists, while Cooley, Trocheck, Sergachev, Peeke, Simashev and Crouse all appeared on the scoresheet before the third period even began.

Depth kept showing up all the way to the finish

Utah did not spend the third period simply running out the clock. Daniil But scored at 12:50 on a tip-in from Carcone and Nate Schmidt, pushing the margin to 6-0 and giving the Mammoth goals from five different skaters. Carcone ended the night with a goal and an assist, and Utah piled up 11 assists on its six goals, a useful marker of how many players were involved in the offence.

At the other end, Vejmelka's workload was modest but complete. He stopped all 15 Chicago shots for the shutout, including one save while the Blackhawks were on the power play. Chicago never generated much shooting volume; no Blackhawks skater had more than three shots, and only Anton Frondell reached that total.

The broader team numbers fit the scoreline. Utah finished with a 32-15 edge in shots, landed 42 hits to Chicago's 12 and dominated the faceoff circle by winning 39 draws, a 72.2 per cent success rate. Arvid Soderblom still made 26 saves for Chicago, which says something about how much work he faced, but the Blackhawks were chasing the game almost from the moment Guenther broke through late in the first.

Our take: the details were as lopsided as the score

A 6-0 result can sometimes hide a strange shooting night or a brilliant goaltending theft. This one looks cleaner than that. Utah won the shot count by 17, controlled the dots, converted two of three power plays and killed all three Chicago opportunities. The Mammoth were not living on one hot shooter alone; they had two goals from Guenther, a goal and an assist from Carcone, and helpers from 10 different skaters.

For Chicago, the clearest area for improvement is simple production. Fifteen shots will not win many NHL games, and a 27.8 per cent faceoff rate leaves too many plays starting on the wrong side of the puck drop. The Blackhawks also finished with 16 giveaways, the same total as Utah, but unlike the Mammoth they could not make those loose moments irrelevant with finishing or special-teams success.

Utah's side of the lesson is more encouraging than complicated. Balanced scoring, quick support on the rush to the scoresheet and sharp special teams gave the Mammoth a structure that held for all 60 minutes. Once the first two goals arrived in that late first-period span, they did not let the game drift back toward Chicago. They kept adding layers to it, and the final margin reflected that.
