Stars turn a tight start into a 4-0 road win over Sabres

Dallas needed only 15 shots to build a convincing 4-0 victory over Buffalo on Wednesday night at KeyBank Center, with Jason Robertson opening the scoring and a three-goal burst in the second period putting the game out of reach.

A second-period surge settled it

For more than half of the opening period, Buffalo kept the game within reach. Then Dallas found its first finish at 9:03 of the first, when Robertson scored on a snap shot with Mikko Rantanen and Wyatt Johnston collecting the assists. That goal gave the Stars their first edge and, as it turned out, all the support they would need.

The game tilted decisively in the second. Sam Steel doubled the lead at 9:36, finishing a play set up by Thomas Harley and Rantanen. Buffalo still had time to respond at 2-0, but Dallas struck again at 13:57 when Rantanen scored on a backhand from Nils Lundkvist and Johnston, and the Stars added another just 1:37 later when Roope Hintz converted a snap shot off passes from Johnston and Rantanen.

That sequence turned a manageable deficit into a rout. Dallas scored three times in a span of 5:58 in the second period and never gave Buffalo a route back into the night. With only 15 shots in total, the Stars were ruthlessly efficient, while Buffalo's 11 saves from Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen were not enough to offset the finishing at the other end.

Rantanen and Johnston drove a precise attack

The names repeated throughout the scoring summary, and that is the clearest explanation for how Dallas created separation so quickly. Rantanen finished with a goal and three assists, touching every Stars goal after helping set up Robertson in the first. Johnston added three assists of his own, including helpers on the third and fourth goals of the second-period flurry.

Dallas did not overwhelm Buffalo with volume. The Stars simply made their touches count. Robertson scored once on four shots, Hintz scored once on five, and Steel added the other goal. Harley and Lundkvist each supplied an assist from the blue line, giving Dallas contributions from several layers of the lineup without needing a long list of scorers.

The supporting numbers underline how controlled the visitors were in key areas. Dallas won 65 per cent of the faceoffs, taking 26 draws to Buffalo's 14, and that steady edge helped the Stars play from possession after stoppages. The Stars also went 1-for-2 on the power play, while Buffalo went 0-for-2, another small but important difference in a game that was otherwise light on total shot volume.

Our take: Buffalo needed more pressure, and Dallas gave up very little

Buffalo's biggest problem was straightforward: too little offense over the course of the night. The Sabres were held to 14 shots and never scored, even though Dallas was charged with 18 giveaways. That combination suggests Buffalo could not turn extra pucks into enough direct pressure or enough finished sequences to test the result.

The faceoff gap mattered too. A team chasing the game cannot afford to lose nearly two-thirds of the draws, and Buffalo finished at 35 per cent. That left the Sabres trying to recover possession rather than start with it, especially after the score moved from 1-0 to 2-0 and then quickly to 4-0 in the second period.

From the Dallas side, this was the kind of tidy road performance coaches trust. Jake Oettinger stopped all 14 shots he faced for the shutout, the Stars blocked 11 shots in front of him, and the game's most productive players also happened to be the ones who finished it off quickly. When a team scores four times, wins the special-teams battle and dominates the dot, there is not much mystery in the final score.
