A first-period burst that decided the night

Pittsburgh seized the game in a span of 116 seconds. Crosby opened the scoring at 9:00 of the first period with a wrist shot off feeds from Tommy Novak and Declan Carlile, then Koivunen doubled the lead at 10:56 with a backhand finish set up by Hendrix Lapierre and Bryan Rust.

That pair of goals mattered even more because neither side scored in the second period. Once the Penguins reached intermission up 2-0, Buffalo was forced to play from behind the rest of the way. In a game that finished with only four total goals, that short first-period sequence was the difference between dictating terms and chasing them.

Buffalo won categories, Pittsburgh won the key moments

The Sabres had enough numbers to suggest they were in this game. They outshot Pittsburgh 20-17, won 62.5 per cent of the faceoffs and led 20-14 in hits. On many nights, that combination gives a team a strong chance to control the result.

But hockey games are rarely decided by one statistical edge, and Buffalo could not turn those advantages into enough finishing. Pittsburgh blocked 10 shots, survived two Sabres power plays and made Buffalo's extra puck possession feel less dangerous than the raw totals imply. The Penguins, meanwhile, needed only a handful of clean openings to build the cushion that carried them home.

The middle of the game stayed quiet, and that favoured the Penguins

The scoreless second period was exactly what Pittsburgh wanted. After striking twice in the first, the Penguins did not need to open the game up. Every empty Buffalo shift nudged the Sabres closer to a night in which their early lapse would define everything that followed.

The third period ended 1-1, which meant Buffalo never erased the two-goal damage from the opening frame. Pittsburgh simply matched the Sabres over the last 20 minutes and protected the margin it had already earned. That is not always the prettiest way to win, but it is a practical one, especially on a night when the Penguins were not generating shot volume.

This was a useful result for Pittsburgh, but also a reminder that efficiency can be fragile. The Penguins managed only 17 shots and won just 37.5 per cent of the faceoffs, while also being charged with 17 giveaways. That is not a formula that guarantees repeatable success. What saved them here was sharp finishing during their best first-period stretch and enough defensive resistance afterward to keep Buffalo from making the shot count matter.

There were still clear positives in the details. Crosby's finish gave the Penguins their first breakthrough, Koivunen added the immediate second punch, and the supporting work from Novak, Carlile, Lapierre and Rust showed up directly on the scoresheet. Erik Karlsson finished plus-2, while Crosby, Koivunen, Lapierre, Rust and Carlile were all on the right side of the goal differential in a low-event game.

For Buffalo, the frustration is obvious. More faceoff wins, more hits and more shots should usually produce more than one goal. The Sabres also went 0-for-2 on the power play, and that left them no margin to recover after falling behind 2-0. Conor Timmins and Matt Grzelcyk both finished minus-2, a small statistical snapshot of how costly Pittsburgh's decisive first-period push proved to be.

The bigger lesson for the Sabres is not that they were overrun. They were not. The problem was that their better volume never became a better scoreline. Pittsburgh, by contrast, treated its brief window of control like an opportunity to end the argument early. On this night, that was enough.
