Kraken’s four-goal second period turns Detroit lead into a 6-3 Seattle win

Seattle erased an early second-period deficit in a hurry Friday night, scoring four times in the middle frame and beating the Detroit Red Wings 6-3 at Little Caesars Arena. Frederick Gaudreau struck twice, Philipp Grubauer made 38 saves, and the Kraken paired clinical finishing with timely defending to overcome a 41-25 disadvantage in shots.

Detroit’s edge lasted 39 seconds

The opening period hinted at a close night. Viktor Arvidsson put Detroit ahead at 9:19 of the first with a wrist shot off feeds from Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider, but Seattle answered before intermission. Berkly Catton tied it at 14:52, finishing a backhand chance with Kaapo Kakko and Josh Mahura drawing the assists.

Detroit moved back in front at 4:00 of the second when William Wallinder scored on a snap shot, with Alex DeBrincat and Michael Brandsegg-Nygård helping build the play. That lead vanished almost immediately. Gaudreau tied the game just 39 seconds later, converting at 4:39 off a setup from Ryan Winterton and Ben Meyers.

From there, the game swung hard toward Seattle. Mackie Samoskevich gave the Kraken their first lead at 6:59 with Jared McCann assisting, and Gaudreau struck again at 7:44 on another play finished from passes by Winterton and Meyers. In a span of 3:05, Detroit’s 2-1 advantage had become a 4-2 Seattle lead.

Depth scoring met a heavy workload

Seattle did not need one line to carry the offence. Gaudreau had the two-goal night, but Meyers added a goal and two assists, Catton finished with a goal and an assist, and both Winterton and Brandon Montour supplied two assists. Vince Dunn’s third-period goal at 11:53, set up by Chandler Stephenson and Montour, stretched the margin to 6-2 and gave the Kraken a cushion that held through the final minutes.

The finishing mattered because Detroit generated far more volume. The Red Wings outshot Seattle 41-25, yet Grubauer turned aside 38 of those attempts for a .927 save percentage. Seattle also blocked 20 shots, with Adam Larsson recording four blocks and Montour and Ville Ottavainen adding three apiece, a useful layer of protection in front of the goaltender.

Detroit still found some bright spots. Brandsegg-Nygård followed his second-period assist with a third-period goal at 15:27, Wallinder also scored, and Arvidsson opened the night. Dylan Larkin won 11 of 16 faceoffs, helping Detroit edge the overall faceoff count 27-26. But the Red Wings were chasing the game after the middle-period collapse, and that changed the meaning of everything they did afterward.

The special-teams numbers were even, with both clubs going 1-for-3 on the power play, so the difference showed up elsewhere. Seattle was sharper with its chances and steadier in the moments that decided the score. Detroit, by contrast, split the goaltending load and finished the night with 19 saves on 25 shots against.

Our take: Seattle found the decisive stretch, Detroit wasted its shot advantage

A 41-shot night usually gives a team a path to points, and Detroit did enough offensive work to suggest the game should have stayed in reach. The problem was not a lack of attempts. The problem was how expensive the mistakes became once Seattle started finishing. The Red Wings regained the lead at 4:00 of the second, then gave up three goals before that period was eight minutes old. That sequence, more than any total on the stat sheet, decided the night.

For Seattle, the encouraging part is how many players drove the result. This was not a game stolen by goaltending alone, even with Grubauer excellent. The Kraken answered quickly, got repeat contributions from the Gaudreau-Winterton-Meyers combination, and kept adding through Catton, Samoskevich and Dunn. When a team can win despite being outshot by 16, it usually means two things were working at once: the goaltender held firm, and the finishers made their best chances count. That was Seattle’s formula here.
