Four and a half minutes that set the game
Utah broke the deadlock at 11:55 of the first period when Mikhail Sergachev scored on a slap shot, with Dylan Guenther and Clayton Keller collecting the assists. The second goal arrived at 16:31, and it changed the feel of the night more than any later insurance marker. Nick Schmaltz finished a snap shot from Keller and John Marino, giving the Mammoth a 2-0 edge before Columbus had found a way onto the board.
That sequence mattered because it gave Utah a margin to protect instead of a game to chase. Columbus did answer quickly in the second period, cutting the deficit to 2-1 just 1:30 in when Kent Johnson scored on a snap shot off a feed from Matthew Knies. For a moment, the Blue Jackets had the kind of goal that can reopen a game. What they could not do was add the next one.
From there, Utah's defensive line on the scoresheet held. The Mammoth allowed only one goal all night, and their goaltender finished with 17 saves on 18 shots. Columbus stayed within reach longer than the final margin suggests, but it never managed to erase the damage from those late first-period goals.
Guenther and Schmaltz finished the job
The game stayed at one goal into the third, which left Columbus with a real opportunity if it could produce the equalizer. Utah removed that tension at 5:59. Guenther struck on a slap shot, with Logan Cooley and Sergachev assisting, and the Mammoth were back up by two. Instead of a one-shot game deep into the period, Columbus was again trying to climb from behind.
Schmaltz supplied the final answer at 14:13 of the third. His second goal of the night, a wrist shot assisted by Cooley and Guenther, stretched the lead to 4-1 and ended any late suspense. It was Utah's cleanest stretch of finishing: two third-period goals, both involving players who had already helped shape the first 40 minutes.
The scoring summary also shows how connected Utah's top contributors were. Schmaltz scored twice. Guenther finished with a goal and two assists. Keller had two assists, Cooley had two assists, and Sergachev added a goal and an assist. When a team gets repeat contributions from that many of its primary names in the same game, a lead tends to feel sturdier than a one-line breakout.
A shot gap that matched the result
Utah backed up the scoring line with volume. The Mammoth generated 31 shots on goal, while Columbus finished with 18. The Blue Jackets' goalie stopped 27 shots and prevented the margin from growing earlier, but the workload never really disappeared. On the other side, Utah's goalie had a quieter night after Johnson's second-period finish and turned a manageable total into a comfortable result.
For Columbus, the frustration is not hard to locate. The Blue Jackets found their response goal early in the second period and still finished with only one scorer and one assist on the night. That is not a tactical verdict so much as a numerical one: 18 shots, one finish, no second breakthrough. Johnson's goal offered the opening the home side needed; Utah's answer in the third underlined which club made more of its chances.
Our take: Utah's best players drove the whole evening
This was not a win built on one burst from one line and little else. Utah's best players kept reappearing in the decisive moments, from Keller on both first-period goals to Cooley on both third-period goals, with Guenther and Sergachev contributing at both ends of the night. That kind of overlap is usually a strong sign for an offence because it means the creation did not stop after the opening push.
Columbus can take one useful point from the loss: the Johnson goal proved the game was still recoverable after the first intermission. But the next step is obvious from the record of the night. The Blue Jackets need more than a single conversion when they get back within one, and they need to turn that moment into a larger share of the shot total. Utah did not overwhelm the scoreboard in one flash; it built the result in stages, and Columbus never matched enough of them.
