Utah’s quick answers buried every Kings comeback in 6-3 win over Los Angeles

Utah set the tone before Los Angeles found its footing

Utah’s first period established the script. Daniil But opened the scoring at 8:49 with a tip-in off feeds from MacKenzie Weegar and Tij Iginla, then Clayton Keller doubled the lead at 18:43 with an unassisted snap shot. Los Angeles was chasing before the game had settled, and that mattered because Utah never really surrendered the initiative afterward.

The Kings did respond early in the second. Brandt Clarke redirected home at 2:42, with Adrian Kempe and Quinton Byfield on the play, to make it 2-1 and give Los Angeles a route back into the night. The problem was how little time that momentum lasted. Just 1:09 later, Nick Schmaltz restored Utah’s two-goal cushion at 3:51, finishing a sequence set up by Mikhail Sergachev and Keller.

That quick reply was the first of the game’s defining turns. Anders Lee added another Utah goal at 12:22 of the second, with But and Weegar collecting assists, and although Martin Chromiak’s backhand at 16:23 trimmed the score to 4-2, the Kings were still spending the evening trying to erase damage rather than impose their own pace. Utah’s offense kept arriving before Los Angeles could build much of a run.

Every Kings rally met an answer

If the second period hinted at a comeback, the opening minutes of the third made it real. Taylor Ward scored at 1:48, assisted by Kenny Connors and Liam Lefebvre, and suddenly the Kings were down just one at 4-3. Again, though, Utah answered almost instantly. Liam O’Brien scored at 3:14 off passes from Maveric Lamoureux and Sergachev, pushing the margin back to two before Los Angeles could turn one surge into sustained pressure.

That sequence captured the difference between the teams. Los Angeles had moments. Utah had solutions. Lee’s second goal at 19:10, assisted by Dylan Guenther and Logan Cooley, finished the scoring and sealed a two-goal night for the veteran winger. Lee was the headline finisher, but Utah’s attack was broader than that: But had a goal and an assist, Keller contributed a goal and an assist, and Sergachev and Weegar each supplied two helpers. For Los Angeles, Clarke’s goal and assist stood out, while Chromiak and Ward provided the other finishes in a losing effort.

The team numbers reinforce the same story. Utah outshot Los Angeles 35-22 and won 57.1 percent of the faceoffs, two edges that helped it keep returning to offense even when the Kings briefly changed the mood. Karel Vejmelka stopped 19 shots for Utah, while the Kings were credited with 29 saves as a team. Neither club was spotless defensively, but Utah generated more of the game and had more players shaping it.

Our take: the swing moments were everything

Our take: this was a lesson in the value of immediate responses. Los Angeles got within one goal twice, first at 2-1 and later at 4-3, and Utah erased both moments almost as soon as they appeared. Schmaltz scored 1:09 after Clarke’s goal in the second period, and O’Brien scored 1:26 after Ward’s goal in the third. In a 6-3 game, those are not minor details; they are the game.

For the Kings, the clearest area to clean up is what happens right after good things occur. A team can survive allowing the first two goals if it manages the next few shifts well enough to reset the night. Los Angeles did not. The Kings also finished with 24 giveaways and only 42.9 percent of the faceoff wins, a combination that makes it harder to protect momentum once it is earned. Clarke gave them a lift, and the late second and early third offered a path, but the restarts after those goals never held.

For Utah, the result is strong, but there is still a caution in the numbers. The Mammoth also had 22 giveaways, took 22 penalty minutes, and allowed the Kings to stay close despite owning the shot advantage. Both teams went 1-for-4 on the power play, so the special-teams battle did not rescue Los Angeles, yet Utah still left enough openings to invite pressure. When a club scores six, those flaws can be overlooked. They should not be. What Utah proved here is that its scoring depth can carry a night. What it might still want is a cleaner one.
